MacBook Swollen Battery

Battery swollen and the case won't close flat?
Stop charging it — then trade it in safely.

A swelling battery is a lithium cell building gas pressure — it pushes the trackpad up, bows the bottom case, and can become a puncture hazard. The good news: the swelling is sealed inside the battery pack. The logic board, screen, and keyboard above it almost always survive, so we quote from surviving parts value and pay real store credit for a Mac Apple's trade-in usually refuses.

First — do this right now, before anything else

What condition is it in?

Be honest — we pay for broken ones too.

Pay Apple to replace it, or trade it? The math by model

Device Apple Battery Service BackMarket / SellCell LuxuriousComputers
MacBook Pro M1/M2/M3 — trackpad bulging, case bowed $199–$249 (often refused if swollen) $60–$120 $360–$560
MacBook Air M1/M2 — battery pushing keyboard up $159–$199 (if accepted) $40–$90 $210–$360
MacBook Pro 2016–2019 — bottom case won't sit flat $199–$249 top-case service $0–$50 $70–$190
MacBook Air 2017–2019 — visibly swollen, trackpad clicks itself $159 (frequently declined) $0–$30 $45–$130

How it works

1

Stop charging it right now

A swollen battery is an active lithium hazard. Unplug it, power it down, and set it on a hard non-flammable surface. Don't close a lid that won't shut flat. Then call Rick at (740) 223-5530 — do not start by shipping a swollen Mac.

2

Get a quote without risking it

Text a photo of the bulge to (740) 223-5530 or use the calculator. We quote swollen-battery Macs from surviving parts — the swelling is contained to the battery pack, so the board, screen, and keyboard above it almost always still count.

3

Bring it in — don't air-ship it

Swollen lithium cells are restricted from air freight and can be dangerous in a padded mailer. Walk in to 731 E Center St #200, Marion (Tue–Sat 10am–7pm). Outside driving range? Call first and we'll arrange ground-only handling — never standard shipping.

4

Same-day credit + safe disposal

Store credit applies instantly toward any Mac in the shop, and the swollen pack goes to a certified lithium recycler instead of getting more dangerous in your drawer. Most people walk out with a working M1 or M2 the same day.

Why a swollen battery doesn't kill your MacBook's value

The swelling is sealed inside the pack. Lithium-pouch cells expand into the empty space around them — under the trackpad, against the bottom case. That pressure stays inside the battery module; it doesn't damage the silicon next to it.

The trackpad usually recovers. A trackpad that "won't click" on a swollen-battery Mac is just being pushed up from below. Remove the battery and the click comes back — that's why the part still has value.

Boards and screens hold value independently. A clean Retina panel runs $250–$450 as a part, and an Apple Silicon logic board is the most valuable component in the machine. Neither cares that the battery swelled.

Apple's glued-in design works for you here. It's why a battery swap costs $159–$249 — and it's exactly why we can price your Mac on everything else that survived.

Frequently asked questions

Is a swollen MacBook battery dangerous?

It can be. A swelling battery is a lithium-ion cell building internal gas pressure — that's why the trackpad bulges, the keys feel raised, or the bottom case bows out and won't sit flat. The risk is puncture or crush: if the swollen cell is pierced or squeezed it can vent, overheat, or in rare cases catch fire. It is not going to explode just sitting there, but you should stop charging it, stop using it, and not apply any pressure to the bulge.

Do you buy MacBooks with a swollen battery?

Yes — every day. Swelling is the single most common end-of-life battery failure, and it almost never means the Mac itself is dead. The lithium pack is a sealed module; the logic board, Retina screen, and keyboard sitting above it are usually untouched. We quote from those surviving parts, so a swollen-battery MacBook still earns real store credit.

How much is a MacBook with a swollen battery worth?

It depends on the model and what still works. An Apple Silicon M-series Pro with a swollen battery but a healthy board and screen earns $360–$560 in store credit. An M1/M2 Air earns $210–$360. Older 2016–2019 Intel machines earn $45–$190 depending on screen and board condition. Use the calculator above for your exact model and we'll confirm on the bench.

Can I ship a MacBook with a swollen battery?

Not by air, and we don't recommend a standard mailer at all. Swollen lithium batteries are classified as damaged/defective cells and are heavily restricted in air freight — squeezing one into a padded envelope risks puncturing it. The safe options are: walk it in to the Marion shop, or call (740) 223-5530 first and we'll arrange ground-only handling. Never just drop a swollen Mac in a box and ship it.

My trackpad won't click anymore — is that the battery?

Very often, yes. On most MacBooks the battery sits directly under the trackpad. When it swells it pushes the trackpad up from below, so the click feels stuck, mushy, or stops registering entirely. A trackpad that suddenly won't click on an older MacBook is one of the most reliable signs of a swelling battery — pop the bottom cover or bring it in and we'll confirm.

Will Apple take a MacBook with a swollen battery?

Apple's out-of-warranty battery service is $159–$249, and on 2016-and-newer MacBooks the glued-in battery means a whole top-case replacement. Their trade-in program frequently declines a visibly swollen machine outright, or zeroes the offer. We do the opposite — we quote from the parts that survived the swelling, so the screen, board, and keyboard still count toward your credit.

Should I keep using my MacBook until I can trade it in?

No. Once you see a bulge — raised keys, a bowed bottom case, a trackpad that won't click, or a lid that won't close flat — stop charging and stop using it. Continued charge cycles feed the swelling and increase the puncture risk. Power it down, set it somewhere cool and hard, and get it to us. A few days off the charger is the safe move.

How do I know if my battery is swollen or just worn out?

A worn battery just runs short and shows "Service Recommended" in System Settings → Battery. A swollen battery is physical: the bottom case bulges or rocks when you press a corner, the trackpad clicks itself or won't click, the keyboard feels raised in the middle, or the lid won't close flush. If you see any of those, treat it as swollen — stop charging and read our battery health guide for the full check.
