The four reasons people trade in an old Mac

Battery drains too fast

MacBook batteries degrade over charge cycles. A 4-year-old machine may hold 70% of its original charge. That's a problem for working away from an outlet.

Too slow for current work

Intel Macs from 2019–2020 are noticeably slower than Apple silicon models for video exports, large spreadsheets, and browser-heavy work.

Running an old OS

Apple drops security updates for older machines. An Intel Mac from 2017 can't run the latest macOS — a real risk for business and banking.

Needs a repair anyway

If you're already looking at a repair bill, trading in and stepping up often costs less than fixing the old machine.

Why here instead of Apple or Gazelle?

Apple's trade-in is designed for new-iPhone buyers. Run an M1 MacBook Air through their tool and you'll see $80–$120 in Apple Store credit — usable on a $1,599 new Mac. Gazelle and Back Market are pure resellers: they ship your Mac across the country, refurbish it in a warehouse, and mark it up 40%. Their low offer reflects that overhead, not your Mac's actual value.

We're a repair shop in Marion, OH. Your old Mac becomes parts for the warranty bench or gets resold locally. No cross-country logistics, no margin stack — just a straightforward trade. A working M2 Air that Apple quotes at $120 earns $320–$390 here because we know exactly what it's worth on our bench. And if you use the credit toward a refurbished Mac from us, you walk out with more computer for less out-of-pocket than any Apple trade-in program.

How to prepare your old MacBook for trade-in

Three steps before you bring it in or ship it:

  1. Back up your files. Time Machine to an external drive, or use iCloud backup. Once we erase your Mac, the data is gone. Don't skip this step.
  2. Sign out of iCloud. Open System Settings → [your name] → Sign Out. This removes Activation Lock so we can wipe and reactivate the machine. A Mac still tied to an Apple ID gets returned to you — we can't accept it in that state.
  3. Note the model. Flip it over. You'll see "MacBook Air" or "MacBook Pro" and a year or an "A" model number (e.g., A2337). Tell Rick that number and he can quote you in 60 seconds.

Walk in, same-day

Drop it at 731 E Center St #200, Marion. Rick quotes on the spot and applies credit the same day. Tue–Sat 10am–7pm.

What to upgrade to

The most popular upgrade path: Intel Mac → M1 or M2 MacBook Air. The speed difference is dramatic for everyday work, the battery life jumps from 5–6 hours to 15–18 hours, and the fan-free design runs silent all day. Trade in a working Intel Air from 2019 ($80–$130) and pay $240–$290 out of pocket for a refurbished M1 Air. That's a genuinely fast Mac with a 1-year whole-machine warranty for under $350 total.

If you're a heavy user — video, audio, large photos — step to an M2 or M3 Air or a MacBook Pro. Rick can walk you through which model makes sense based on exactly what you do. The chat in the corner is him; ask anything.

Selling your Mac locally vs. online

Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist will sometimes beat our number on a perfect, sought-after model — but it takes time, strangers, cash-in-hand risk, and the possibility of getting lowballed at handoff. Our trade-in is instant: one trip, a locked-in quote, same-day credit applied toward your next Mac. No negotiation, no flakes.

Old MacBook trade-in — FAQ

How much is my old MacBook worth as a trade-in?
It depends on model and year. A working M1 MacBook Air (2020) earns $190–$240 in store credit. An M2 Air (2022) earns $320–$390. Intel machines from 2019–2020 run $80–$180 depending on screen size and storage. Use the calculator above or call (740) 223-5530 with the model number (look for "MacBook" + year engraved on the bottom case).
Do I need to erase my old MacBook before trading it in?
Yes — please do a full erase before you hand it over. On Apple silicon Macs: shut down, hold the power button until you see startup options, click Options, open Erase Assistant, follow the prompts. On Intel Macs running Ventura or later: same process. On older Intel with macOS Monterey: restart in Recovery (⌘R at boot), open Disk Utility, erase Macintosh HD. We never process a trade-in that still has a customer's data on it.
Can I trade in an old Mac even if the battery health is low?
Yes. Battery condition affects the credit offer but doesn't disqualify a trade-in. A machine with 70% battery health that runs normally is still a solid parts donor or a budget resell after battery service. We factor battery cycle count into the quote — tell us what System Information shows and we'll price it honestly.
What if my old MacBook has small cosmetic scratches?
Light scuffs on the bottom case are normal wear and don't change our quote. Deep gouges on the lid, cracked palmrest, or bent chassis lower the offer. If you're unsure, bring it in or send photos to rick@luxuriouscomputers.com and we'll quote it as-seen before you commit.
Can I use trade-in credit to pay for a refurbished Mac?
Yes — that's exactly what it's designed for. Trade in your old Mac, apply the credit at checkout, and pay the difference. Walk-ins can apply credit same day; mail-in credit posts the moment your new purchase clears. We also accept partial credit on buy-now orders placed online.
Do you accept old iMacs or Mac Minis as trade-ins too?
Yes. Desktops qualify at different credit ranges. An M1 iMac (2021) earns $350–$450. An Intel Mac Mini (2020) earns $90–$140. Bring it in or describe it over the phone — Rick quotes desktops the same way as laptops.
