MacBook Soda Spill

Spilled soda on your MacBook?
Apple pays $0. We pay from what survived.

Soda is the most corrosive common spill we see — the sugar creates a conductive film that eats traces for weeks, and Apple wants $800+ for repairs or offers $0 trade-in. We open it up, test every component, and quote from real parts value — because a soda spill rarely kills the screen, SSD, or chassis.

What condition is it in?

Be honest — we pay for broken ones too.

Apple pays $0 for soda damage. Here's what we pay.

Just spilled soda? Do this RIGHT NOW:

  1. Power off immediately — hold the power button for 5 seconds. Soda is highly conductive because of the dissolved sugar and salts — every second it runs with soda inside risks shorting more components.
  2. Unplug everything — charger, USB-C dongles, external drives, headphones. Remove from any dock.
  3. Flip it upside-down in a tent position — open the lid ~45 degrees, invert it so the keyboard faces down over a towel. The soda is sticky and drains slower than water — leave it tented.
  4. Do NOT turn it back on — the sugar residue is already creating a conductive film on the board. Powering on drives current through paths it shouldn't take and kills more components.
  5. Do NOT rinse with water — running water pushes the sugar deeper into the board and under BGA chips where it can never be reached without ultrasonic cleaning.
  6. Do NOT blow-dry or use rice — heat bakes sugar residue into a permanent crust on traces. Rice does nothing inside a sealed laptop chassis and adds starch dust contamination.
  7. Bring it in or ship it within 24 hours — soda corrosion starts faster than coffee or water because of the acid content. The 24-hour window is critical for board survival.

Why soda is the worst common spill for a MacBook

Sugar creates a permanent conductive film. When soda dries on a logic board, the dissolved sugar crystallizes into a sticky film that conducts electricity between traces that should be isolated. This film doesn't evaporate like water — it sits there corroding copper indefinitely. Even after the soda "dries," the damage continues for weeks.

Phosphoric acid attacks copper directly. Colas (Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper) contain phosphoric acid at a pH of 2.5-3.5 — acidic enough to dissolve copper traces on a logic board. This is the same acid used in industrial metal etching. Citrus sodas use citric acid instead, which is slightly gentler but still far more aggressive than coffee or water.

Carbonation drives liquid deeper. The dissolved CO2 in soda creates micro-bubbles that push liquid into crevices, under BGA chips, and through cable connectors that water might not reach. By the time you flip the Mac over, the soda has already penetrated deeper than a non-carbonated drink would.

The screen and chassis almost always survive. Soda enters through the keyboard and pools on the logic board. The display assembly is sealed separately and rarely contacts the liquid. The aluminum chassis, SSD (soldered above the spill path), and battery are typically undamaged. Those components alone are worth hundreds in credit.

Does the type of soda matter?

Diet / zero-sugar soda (best case)

No sugar means no conductive film — the primary damage mechanism is removed. Still contains phosphoric or citric acid, so it's worse than water, but dramatically better than regular soda. Diet soda spills caught within 48 hours often have salvageable boards.

Clear soda — Sprite, 7-Up (moderate)

Contains sugar and citric acid. The citric acid is slightly less aggressive than the phosphoric acid in colas, and clear sodas don't leave the dark staining residue that makes damage harder to trace. Still a serious spill — act within 24 hours for best results.

Regular cola — Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper (worse)

Full sugar + phosphoric acid + caramel coloring. The phosphoric acid is more aggressive on copper than citric, the sugar film is thick, and the dark coloring makes it harder to identify exactly which traces are compromised during cleaning. 24-hour window is critical.

Energy drinks — Monster, Red Bull, Mountain Dew (worst)

Maximum sugar content, citric acid, plus dyes and additives that create additional conductive residue. Energy drinks are the worst non-alcoholic spill we see — the sticky residue is almost impossible to remove from under BGA chips after 48 hours. Bring it in ASAP.

How it works

1

Tell us what happened

Use the trade-in calculator, text Rick at (740) 223-5530, or walk in. What kind of soda, how much spilled, how fast you powered off, and what the Mac does now — every detail gets you a better quote.

2

Full bench teardown

We open it up and inspect every component for sugar residue and corrosion. Soda is the most corrosive common spill because of the sugar and phosphoric acid — but the screen, SSD, and chassis usually survive.

Frequently asked questions

I spilled soda on my MacBook — is it toast?

Not entirely, but soda is one of the worst liquids for a MacBook. The combination of sugar, phosphoric acid (in colas), citric acid (in citrus sodas), and carbonation makes soda significantly more corrosive than water or even coffee. However, "worst for the board" doesn't mean "everything is dead." The screen, SSD, battery, and chassis survive soda spills in the vast majority of cases — and those components alone are worth hundreds in credit.

Is soda worse than water or coffee for a MacBook?

Yes, significantly worse than both. Water is the least damaging liquid because it evaporates cleanly. Coffee adds acids and oils but is still mostly water. Soda adds sugar (which creates a conductive, corrosive film that keeps eating traces for weeks), phosphoric or citric acid (which attacks copper faster than coffee's organic acids), and carbonation (which drives liquid deeper into crevices). Soda is roughly the same severity as juice or energy drinks.

Does it matter what kind of soda was spilled?

Yes. Diet sodas are noticeably less damaging because they use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar — no sticky conductive film. Dark colas (Coke, Pepsi) contain phosphoric acid, which is particularly aggressive on copper. Citrus sodas (Sprite, Mountain Dew) use citric acid, which is slightly less corrosive than phosphoric but still worse than coffee. Clear diet sodas are the best case; dark regular colas with sugar are the worst.

My MacBook still works after a soda spill — should I keep using it?

Absolutely not. Power it off immediately and bring it in. Soda corrosion is progressive and faster than coffee because of the sugar and acids. A soda-spilled MacBook that boots today can die within 5-10 days as the sugar residue continues conducting electricity across traces it shouldn't. The board is worth far more if we can verify it works NOW than after it dies from ongoing corrosion.

How much is a soda-damaged MacBook worth?

An M-series Pro where the board still boots after a soda spill earns $340-$620 in store credit. The logic board is the most valuable component, and catching it while it still works dramatically increases the quote. A fully dead Intel-era machine earns $60-$170 from the screen, keyboard, chassis, and salvageable board components.

Can you clean a logic board after a soda spill?

Sometimes, but soda is the hardest liquid to clean from a board. The sugar crystallizes into a sticky, conductive film that requires aggressive ultrasonic cleaning with isopropyl alcohol, and even then, if the sugar has been sitting for more than a few days, it may have already corroded through traces. Boards brought in within 24 hours have the best cleaning success rate. After a week, the odds drop significantly.

Does Apple fix soda damage?

Apple will repair it for $600-$1,200+ depending on the model and extent of damage. Their liquid contact indicators (LCI stickers) turn red on contact with any moisture, and once tripped, Apple's trade-in program returns $0 regardless of condition. We price from parts value, so you always get something — even in the worst soda-damage scenario.

Should I try to clean the soda off my MacBook myself?

No. Do not open your MacBook or try to clean it with water, alcohol, or anything else. Soda residue is sticky and deeply embedded — surface wiping does nothing because the damage is on the logic board traces underneath components. Improper cleaning can push residue deeper or damage ribbon cables. Power off, drain tent-style, and bring it in — that's the safest path to the highest quote.
