Just spilled tea? Do this RIGHT NOW:

  1. Power off immediately — hold the power button for 5 seconds. Don't wait for it to shut down gracefully. Tea is conductive — every second it runs risks shorting more traces.
  2. Unplug everything — charger, USB-C dongles, external drives, headphones. Remove from any dock.
  3. Flip it upside-down in a tent position — open the lid ~45 degrees, invert it so the keyboard faces down over a towel. Let gravity drain the tea out.
  4. Do NOT turn it back on — powering on with tea residue inside is what kills components. Tannins haven't started corroding traces yet — you have time.
  5. Do NOT blow-dry or use rice — a hair dryer pushes tea deeper into connectors. Rice does literally nothing except get starch dust in the ports.
  6. Do NOT try to rinse it with water — running water over the keyboard pushes liquid further inside. Proper cleaning requires board-level disassembly and ultrasonic treatment.
  7. Bring it in or ship it ASAP — the faster we get it on the bench, the more components we can verify as working, and the higher your quote.

Why tea is better than coffee for your board (but still not safe)

Tea is less acidic than coffee. Most teas sit around pH 5.5 compared to coffee's pH 4.5 — that one point of pH difference means less aggressive corrosion on copper traces. Unsweetened green tea and herbal infusions are among the least harmful hot liquids that can hit a logic board.

Tannins stain but corrode slowly. Tea tannins leave visible brown staining on the board that looks alarming but is mostly cosmetic. The actual trace damage from tannins is slower than coffee's chlorogenic acid. This gives you a wider window — usually 48-72 hours before significant corrosion on unsweetened tea.

Sugar and honey change everything. A cup of sweet tea with 25g of sugar behaves just like a soda spill. The sugar dries into a conductive film that eats traces for weeks. Honey is worse — it's thick, sticky, and nearly impossible to remove without ultrasonic cleaning. If your tea had sugar or honey, treat it as a soda-level emergency.

Matcha and bubble tea are special cases. Matcha powder creates a fine paste that can clog micro-vias and ball grid array gaps under chips — harder to ultrasonically clean than liquid-only spills. Bubble tea combines sugar, milk, and tapioca starch particles that create the worst-case scenario for board contamination.

Does the type of tea matter?

Unsweetened black/green tea (best case)

Least harmful hot-tea spill. Lower acidity than coffee, no sugar, no oils. If you powered off quickly, board survival rate is high. Expect the best quotes in the tea-spill category.

Herbal tea — chamomile, mint, rooibos (best case)

Essentially flavored hot water. Lowest tannin content, lowest acidity. This is the most survivable hot-liquid spill after plain water. Power off, drain, bring it in — prognosis is good.

Tea with milk — English Breakfast, chai latte (moderate)

Milk fat leaves residue on board traces that traps moisture underneath. The proteins in milk also create a film that's harder to clean than tannins alone. Board recovery usually successful within 48 hours.

Sweet tea / honey tea / chai with sugar (worse)

Sugar turns a mild tea spill into a soda-equivalent event. Southern sweet tea can have 25-30g of sugar per cup. Honey is equally bad — thick, sticky, and nearly impossible to remove at home. Get it to us within 24 hours.

Bubble tea / matcha latte / Thai tea (worst)

Maximum contamination — sugar, milk, plus particulates (tapioca starch, matcha powder, Thai tea dye). These substances create paste-like deposits under chips that are the hardest to clean. Screen and chassis still worth quoting even in the worst case.

I spilled tea on my MacBook — is it ruined?

Usually not. Tea is actually the second most common hot-beverage spill we see after coffee. Unsweetened tea (black, green, herbal) is primarily water with tannins — less acidic than coffee and less corrosive overall. The survival rate depends on how fast you powered off, how much tea hit the board, and whether it had sugar, honey, or milk. A quick power-off on an unsweetened tea spill is one of the better liquid-damage scenarios.

Is tea less damaging than coffee to a MacBook?

Generally yes. Plain tea has lower acidity than coffee (pH ~5.5 vs ~4.5 for coffee) and contains no oils. The main concern is tannins, which stain but corrode more slowly than coffee acids. However, sweetened tea — especially sweet tea with sugar, or chai with milk and honey — closes the gap fast because sugars are the real board-killer. My MacBook still works after a tea spill. Should I still bring it in?

Yes, as soon as possible. Like all liquid damage, tea corrosion is progressive. The tannins and any sugars continue reacting with copper traces for weeks after the liquid itself dries. A MacBook that boots today could fail in 10-14 days as micro-corrosion spreads. If it still works now, your quote is much higher because we can verify the board — don't wait.

Yes, significantly. Sweet tea (Southern-style) can have 20-30 grams of sugar per cup — as much as a can of soda.
