What We Pay for Broken Macs
Every quote is priced from real parts value — not a flat percentage, not a mystery formula. Here's the typical range by damage type:
| Mac + Damage Type | Apple Trade-In | We Pay |
|---|---|---|
| M2 MacBook Air — cracked screen | $0 (rejected) | $140–$220 |
| M1 MacBook Pro 14" — dead | $0 (rejected) | $80–$150 |
| M1 MacBook Air — 100% dead | $0 (rejected) | $40–$75 |
| M2 MacBook Air — liquid damage | $0 (rejected) | $50–$140 |
| M1 MacBook Pro 14" — cracked screen | $0 (rejected) | $180–$320 |
| Intel MacBook Pro 2019 — cracked screen | $0 (rejected) | $60–$120 |
Ranges are store credit. Exact quote depends on model, storage size, and which components survived.
Find Your Situation
Each page below covers one damage type in detail — specific models, realistic credit ranges, and exactly what to expect.
Any Damage
Sell a Broken MacBook
The broadest category — cracked screen, won't turn on, bad battery, or just acts weird. We quote every broken MacBook from actual parts value, not a flat percentage.
MacBook Air
Sell a Broken MacBook Air
MacBook Air M1, M2, and M3 — cracked, dead, or water-damaged. Apple turns these away; we pay for the parts that are still good.
MacBook Pro
Sell a Broken MacBook Pro
MacBook Pro 13", 14", and 16" in any condition. The Pro logic board and screen assembly are worth real money even when the machine won't boot.
Cracked Screen
Sell a MacBook With a Cracked Screen
A cracked display makes your Mac unusable — but the logic board, battery, and keyboard are usually fine. We price it on what's intact, not what's broken.
Screen Damage
Sell Any Mac With a Cracked Screen
iMacs, MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros — cracked screen on any model. We quote based on the parts, get you a real number, and apply it same day.
Won't Turn On
Sell a Dead MacBook
Won't power on at all. Even a 100% dead MacBook Air M1 earns $40–$75 in store credit — the screen, battery, and chassis are still worth something to our bench techs.
Water / Liquid
Sell a Liquid-Damaged MacBook
Spill, flood, or humidity damage. Apple rejects every liquid-damaged Mac; we quote based on what survived the spill and what didn't.
Water Damage
Sell a Water-Damaged MacBook
Water in the keyboard, pooling under the display, or a full submersion. We strip it down to the board level and price every surviving component — logic board, screen, battery, chassis.
Won't Power On
Sell a MacBook That Won't Turn On
No chime, no fan spin, no backlight. Could be the charging port, the logic board, or just the battery. We diagnose the root cause and pay for whatever is still good.
Working but Outdated
Sell Your Old MacBook
Still works, but the battery is shot, it won't run the latest macOS, or it's just too slow for how you work now. A working machine is worth real upgrade credit — apply it same day toward a faster Mac.
Trade Up
Upgrade Your MacBook
Trade in your current Mac and apply instant credit toward a newer one — same-day swap with free data transfer. Working M1 Air earns $280–$380 toward an M3.
MacBook Air
Sell Your MacBook Air
Working M1, M2, or M3 MacBook Air ready for a new owner. We pay 15–30% more than Apple trade-in — and we close on the spot.
MacBook Pro
Sell Your MacBook Pro
M1, M2, or M3 MacBook Pro in working condition. Even Intel Pros from 2017+ qualify. Get a quote in minutes — apply same day.
Bad Battery
Sell a MacBook With a Bad Battery
Dead, swollen, or stuck on "Service Recommended." Apple charges $159–$249 for battery service — we quote the logic board, screen, and keyboard that still work perfectly.
Swollen Battery
Sell a MacBook With a Swollen Battery
Trackpad bulging, case won't close flat, keyboard raised in the middle? Stop charging it — it's a lithium hazard. Apple often declines swollen machines; we quote the board, screen, and keyboard that survived and arrange safe handling.
SSD Failure
Sell a MacBook With a Failed SSD
Flashing folder, kernel panics, drive not detected? On 2016-and-newer Macs the SSD is soldered, so Apple's only fix is a $600+ board swap and trade-in declines no-boot machines. We quote the screen, board, and keyboard that survived — and attempt data recovery first.
Logic Board Failure
Sell a MacBook With Logic Board Failure
No power, random shutdowns, no display, kernel panics, USB ports dead, or won't charge? Logic board repair costs $600–$1,200 — more than most Macs are worth. We buy dead-board MacBooks from surviving parts value (screen, keyboard, chassis) that every buyback program declines.
Broken Keyboard
Sell a MacBook With a Broken Keyboard
Dead, sticky, or repeating keys — butterfly models included. Apple's top-case repair runs $350–$600; we pay for the board, screen, and battery that still work.
Cracked Trackpad
Sell a MacBook With a Cracked Trackpad
Cracked glass, dead click, or a pad bulging from a swollen battery. Apple's repair runs $200–$400+; we pay for the board, screen, and keyboard that still work.
Trackpad Won't Click
Sell a MacBook Whose Trackpad Won't Click
Dead click, stiff click, or clicking by itself — usually a Taptic Engine fault or a swelling battery underneath. Apple's repair runs $200–$450; we pay for the board, screen, and keyboard that still work.
Blown Speakers
Sell a MacBook With Blown Speakers
Crackling, buzzing, or dead speakers — including the notorious 2016–2019 Pro woofers. Apple swaps the whole top case for $300–$600; we pay for the board, screen, and battery that still work.
Overheating
Sell an Overheating MacBook
Runs hot, fans roaring, throttles, or shuts down under load — often dried paste, a clogged fan, or a swelling battery. Apple's board-level fix runs $475–$700; we pay for the screen, board, and keyboard that still work.
Broken Hinge
Sell a MacBook With a Broken Hinge
Loose, grinding, snapped, or a lid fully separated from the base. Apple replaces the whole display assembly for $400–$700; we pay for the board, screen, and battery that still work.
Bent Frame
Sell a MacBook With a Bent Frame
Dented case, warped unibody, crushed corner, or a lid that won't close flush after a drop. Apple swaps the whole housing for $400–$800; we pay for the board, screen, and battery that still work.
Dented Corner
Sell a MacBook With a Dented Corner
Dropped it and dented one corner — cosmetic ding to deep impact dent. Apple replaces the whole housing for $400–$800; we pay for the board, screen, and battery that still work.
Scratched Screen
Sell a MacBook With a Scratched Screen
Surface scratches, deep gouges, or anti-reflective coating wear (staingate). Apple penalizes any visible display damage; we price from actual panel function — if it displays, it counts.
Screen Lines
Sell a MacBook With Lines on the Screen
Vertical stripes, horizontal bands, or flexgate "stage light" bars. Apple replaces the whole display for $350–$700; we pay for the board, battery, and keyboard that still work.
No Display
Sell a MacBook With No Display
Powers on — chime, fans, caps-lock light — but the screen stays black. Apple replaces the whole display for $350–$700; we pay for the board, battery, and keyboard that still work.
Broken Wi-Fi
Sell a MacBook With Broken Wi-Fi
"No hardware installed," grayed-out Wi-Fi, or constant drops. On Apple Silicon the Wi-Fi chip is soldered to the logic board, so Apple's fix is a $400–$700 board swap; we pay for the board, screen, and battery that still work.
Stuck on Apple Logo
Sell a MacBook Stuck on the Apple Logo
Boot loop, frozen progress bar, or a logo that never goes away. Usually software or the soldered SSD — Apple's fix is a $475+ board swap; we pay for the screen, board, and battery that provably work.
Won't Wake From Sleep
Sell a MacBook That Won't Wake From Sleep
Opens to a black screen, needs a force-restart to come back, or dies in sleep entirely. Usually an SMC glitch, a display flex cable, or a tired battery — Apple's fix is a $475+ board swap; we pay for the screen, board, and keyboard that still work.
MacBook Air — Liquid
Sell a Water-Damaged MacBook Air
Spilled on your Air? Apple rejects liquid-damaged machines outright. We bench-test what survived and quote from real parts value, same day.
iMac — Any Damage
Sell a Broken iMac
iMac 24" M1/M3, 27" 5K, or 21.5" with a cracked screen, display failure, or won't-turn-on issue. Apple pays $0 for damaged iMacs — we pay from parts value.
Liquid Spill
Sell a MacBook With Liquid Spill Damage
Coffee, water, soda, wine — any spill triggers Apple's LCI stickers and their trade-in drops to $0. We open it up, test every component individually, and pay for what survived.
Coffee Spill
Sell a MacBook With Coffee Spill Damage
Coffee is the #1 liquid spill we see. Black coffee, latte, or iced — Apple rejects all liquid damage for $0. We bench-test what survived and quote from real parts value, same day.
Tea Spill
Sell a MacBook With Tea Spill Damage
Tea is the #2 hot beverage spill after coffee. Unsweetened tea is less corrosive, but sweet tea and bubble tea are just as bad as soda. Apple pays $0 regardless — we bench-test and quote from real parts value.
Soda Spill
Sell a MacBook With Soda Spill Damage
Soda is the most corrosive common spill — sugar + phosphoric acid eat through traces for weeks. Apple pays $0 for any liquid damage; we bench-test every component and quote from real parts value.
Admin / Activation Lock
Sell a Locked MacBook
Activation lock, MDM enrollment, firmware/EFI password, or admin password you don't know? Apple's trade-in says no, Gazelle says no, SellCell says no. We verify the serial isn't stolen, quote from full hardware value, and buy locked Macs that every buyback program declines.
Broken USB-C Port
Sell a MacBook With a Broken USB-C Port
Dead port, won't charge on one side, loose connector, or burned-out USB-C. Apple's only fix is a $400–$700 board swap because the ports are soldered; we pay for the screen, board, battery, and keyboard that still work.
iPad — Any Damage
Sell a Broken iPad
iPad Pro, Air, mini, or standard iPad with a cracked screen, dead battery, or won't-turn-on issue. Apple pays $0 for damaged iPads — we pay from parts value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell a broken Mac — not just trade it in?
All broken-Mac transactions work as store credit you apply toward any Mac in our shop. We don't cut cash checks, but the credit has no expiry and covers any product, accessory, or care plan we sell. Most customers end up with a better machine than they expected because the credit goes farther here than Apple or online buyers would offer.
What broken Macs do you buy?
MacBook Air (M1, M2, M3), MacBook Pro 13" / 14" / 16" (M1 through M3), iMac 24", and most Intel Macs 2017 and newer. We also take dead or cracked iPads and iPhones toward a Mac purchase. If you're not sure whether your specific model qualifies, text Rick a photo at (740) 223-5530 and he'll give you a number in minutes.
How do you price a broken MacBook?
We price from parts value — logic board, screen assembly, battery, keyboard, and chassis. We pull eBay sold listings for the specific components your Mac model uses, apply a margin for our labor, and give you a real number. It isn't a flat percentage or a magic formula; it's what the parts are actually worth on the secondary market.
Does the Mac have to be Apple Silicon or will you take Intel too?
We take both. Intel Macs from 2017 and newer still have active parts markets and are worth quoting. The older the model, the more the credit leans on the screen and chassis rather than the logic board, but we won't turn away a 2019 MacBook Pro with a cracked display.
How do I get the Mac to you if I'm not local?
We email a prepaid shipping label once you accept a quote. Box it up with bubble wrap, drop it at any UPS location, and we receive it typically within two business days. If our bench evaluation doesn't match the description you gave, we call you before doing anything — we never quietly adjust the credit without your approval.
